Acquirers do not treat this as a compliance slip, because the card schemes do not treat it that way either. Processing for an unapproved business defeats the entire underwriting process, since the whole point of approving a merchant is knowing what is being sold, to whom, and at what risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practical consequences are heavy. Termination usually happens immediately rather than at the end of a notice period. Reserves and pending settlements are typically held rather than released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pay attention to volume from countries you do not market in, refund patterns that do not correspond to anything you have fulfilled, and chargeback reason codes describing products you have never sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any one of these can have an innocent explanation. Several together, particularly if they appeared suddenly, deserve investigation before somebody else does it for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The controls that actually prevent it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Start with credentials, because that is where most of this originates. Every API key should belong to one integration, be documented, and be revoked when the relationship ends. Restrict which domains your checkout is permitted to load on, since an allowlist stops your payment page being embedded somewhere you did not authorise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vet affiliates and resellers properly rather than treating them as a marketing arrangement, and put the restriction in writing that your payment credentials are for your approved products only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Review what is flowing through your account monthly rather than only checking the total, because the total is the one number that will look completely normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also helps to have an acquiring relationship where traffic is monitored actively rather than reviewed after the scheme raises it, which is worth weighing when you assess who you are routed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
